Cebu City Cebu City came alive last January 12 with the energy of over 12,275 runners from more than 40 nations participating in the 2025 Cebu Marathon, one of the country’s largest and most prestigious annual races. But amidst the pounding of running shoes and cheers of supporters, another group was quietly yet vibrantly present along the marathon route—Jehovah’s Witnesses—offering encouragement and a message of hope through a special public witnessing campaign.

A Witness Along the Way

Strategically set up at key marathon locations, including SM Seaside, the Waterfront Hotel, and JY Square, Jehovah's Witnesses were present with their mobile carts and displays featuring Bible-based literature. Their campaign focused on the practical guidance the Bible offers for daily life and the hope for a brighter future. Runners, supporters, and spectators alike had the opportunity to view the displays and take free literature, which emphasized positive, Bible-based messages of encouragement.

The marathon was seen as an excellent opportunity to reach a diverse and international audience. With thousands of people participating and spectating, many were introduced to the Bible’s practical wisdom and its relevance in modern times. Literature in multiple languages was made available, ensuring that the message could resonate with people from all walks of life.

A Record-Breaking Turnout

This year’s Cebu Marathon shattered previous attendance records, with 3,127 participants tackling the grueling 42-kilometer course. The 25-kilometer category attracted the largest number of entrants, with 6,165 runners, while the 12K and 6K races saw 2,090 and 893 participants, respectively. The impressive turnout marked a significant leap from last year’s 8,800 runners, further solidifying the marathon’s reputation as a premier running event.

For Jehovah’s Witnesses, the marathon’s massive audience presented a unique opportunity to share their message of hope with a wide range of people in a positive, uplifting environment.

Messages of Hope Amid the Struggle

The marathon itself is a test of endurance and perseverance, qualities that resonate with the Bible's teachings. Volunteers used the occasion to highlight parallels between running a race and striving for spiritual goals, reminding those who stopped by of the importance of maintaining a positive outlook and looking to the future with hope.

Many runners and spectators who paused at the carts received literature that encouraged self-reflection and practical steps toward a more meaningful life. The campaign emphasized how the Bible’s timeless principles can help people navigate challenges, whether physical, emotional, or spiritual.

A Shared Sense of Community

As Cebu City continues to solidify its place on the global marathon map, events like this year’s race highlight the sense of community that brings people together—whether to celebrate athletic achievement or to share an encouraging message of hope. For Jehovah's Witnesses, it was a chance to showcase their global efforts to share Bible-based teachings in action, fostering connections through meaningful and positive engagement.

The 2025 Cebu Marathon wasn’t just about breaking records or crossing finish lines. It was also about creating opportunities to uplift, inspire, and remind people of the strength that comes from hope and endurance—qualities that extend far beyond the racecourse.
